Default pricing stock for ads

Hi folks-

I need some historical pricing data about what you have charged for use of your stock in ads. Here is my specific situation: a new edition of Builder/Architect magazine is being started in my area. The feature interview is with one of my clients and several of the sub contractors the company uses are buying ads in the issue. I have been contacted by them to use images I originally shot for the architect in these ads. The magazine will have an initial printing of 2000 copies and most of these folks are taking 1/2 page ads.

Real world (not Fotoquote) experiences to offer?

Thanks!

Cameron

Cameron,
I was waiting and wanting to see more posting on this subject... Please feel free to use our pricing calculator for any sales. We keep it up to date...

Here is the data from our calculator below:

Image Number: Image12345
Photographer: Wile E. Coyote
Main Category: Advertising Print
Use: Magazine Advertisement
Circulation: Up to 5,000
Layout: 1/2 page
Distribution: USA WEST
Languages: One
Time Period: 3 months
Insertion: 1
Customer Name: Road Runner
Client/Product Name: Acme Bricks
Start Date: 12/01/2008
Magazines: Builder/Architect magazine
Current price is $ 615.04

What I would adjust for being only 2,000 Circulation and a trade mag...
Somewhere in the $350-$400 range for 1 Insertion.
Adding 10% for 2-3 Insertions
20% for 4-6 Insertions
30% for 7-12 Insertions

Hope this helps everyone...

Thanks very much for the info Justin. I don't mean to belittle Fotoquote, its just that my experience shows that my market (client direct) prices significantly lower in almost all instances.

I'm glad to see the price I quoted was very reasonable, based on your numbers. I'm just sorry the clients didn't think so!

Best,

Cameron

Can someone tell what Fotoquote says the price should be? I'd be curious to know.

This thread is a bit old now but I wanted to offer some personal insight for working with magazines like the "builder/architect".

You will be very lucky indeed to ever get any payment (in money) from one of these magazines for reuse of your photos. (advertisers may be willing to pay your fees or the publisher may be willing to trade advertising space for useage) The business plan for the magazine does not support buying photos. The "publisher" is usually a local individual who is trying to earn a few bucks by selling the feature story idea to a builder in their region to use for self-marketing. It is not a bad concept or strategy for all those involved but there is usually no or very little money available for photos. Naturally the publisher would like to use quality photos supplied by the builder or architect but expects them for free.

Usually the publisher works with a local photographer to shoot new photos for the article and pays for the photography in kind with advertising in the magazine. I have worked for several of these magazines in various regions of the mid-west. I am friends with at least two of these publishers and my wife worked for a time publishing in the Toledo area before we relocated to Texas.
I was given full page full color ads in each issue that contained my photos and was allowed to sell photos to the featured builders if they chose. Unfortunately they seldom chose. Was it a waste of time or a rip-off for me? Not really, I got valuable advertising in a magazine that was read by one of my target groups, I picked up some referrals, I enlarged my portfolio through access to prime projects, I used the experience to improve my credibility by letting potential customers know I was a regular photographer in magazines A, B and C.

At this point in my career I would not commit to an arrangement like this but it was helpful at the time and for those just starting to build a career it can be very beneficial.
